I throw pots using porcelain and stoneware clay bodies. After the pots are thrown and allowed to dry to a stage where they are leather hard I dip the pots in different colored slips. Then I carve the surface of the pots to create a design and to give the pots texture.
The pots are allowed to dry fully and are bisque fired in an electric kiln. The pots are glazed on the interior and then they are fired again in a high temperature salt kiln. When the salt kiln reaches a certain temperature I begin adding a salt solution using a garden sprayer.
The silica in the clays and the slips interacts with the sodium vapour to create a glossy or glazed surface. The salt firing is ideal for allowing me to leave the carved areas of the pots raw or uncoated with glaze because they become covered with a glaze in the kiln.
